Taiwan’s Heavy Metal Bands Set to Rock Helsinki in Cultural Diplomacy Festival

Helsinki: Three Taiwanese heavy metal bands are poised to join forces with Finnish music groups in Helsinki at the end of November for a unique cultural event termed “heavy metal diplomacy.” The festival, organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC), is part of an initiative to promote cultural exchange through music.

According to Focus Taiwan, the GACC announced at a recent press event that the event, titled “F:F:F — Formosa:Finland:Fest,” will feature Taiwan’s Crescent Lament, Flesh Juicer, and Chthonic, alongside Finnish folk metal band Korpiklaani, metal band Lost Society, and folk metal violinist Olli V¤nsk¤. Scheduled for November 27 at Helsinki’s Tiivist¤m¶, the festival aims to blend musical influences from both nations.

Leading the Taiwanese delegation is Crescent Lament’s frontwoman, Muer Chou, who is also a recognized counseling psychologist in Taiwan. Chou expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration by highlighting Finland’s reputation as both the happiest country in the world and a hub for heavy metal music, anticipating that the meeting of such contrasting cultures would yield exciting results. “I believe that the collision between an extremely cold country and a super hot country will create new sparks,” she remarked.

Upon their arrival in Finland, the Taiwanese bands will be joined by Chthonic’s leader Doris Yeh and lead singer Freddy Lim, who currently reside in the country due to Lim’s role as Taiwan’s representative to the Nordic region. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung revealed that the initiative stemmed from President Lai Ching-te’s vision of a “Rock in the North and Classical in the South” diplomacy effort in Europe, inspired by Lim’s background in heavy metal music.

The initiative is further complemented by Taiwan’s representative to Austria, Liu Suan-yung, contributing the classical music element. Liu, a renowned trombonist and former director of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, completes the dual approach to cultural diplomacy.

Lauri Raunio, Finland’s top representative in Taipei, noted that Finland boasts the highest density of metal musicians worldwide, describing the collaboration as a promising cultural phenomenon. The heavy metal diplomacy event is part of the broader “Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025” campaign, aimed at enhancing Taiwan’s cultural footprint on the continent. The campaign includes exhibitions such as the display of iconic treasures from the National Palace Museum at Prague’s National Museum from September 11 to December 31, following the success of Taiwan’s participation in the Paris 2024 Cultural Olympiad.
