Taiwan’s Top Badminton Players Set for High-Stakes Clash at Malaysia Open

Kuala lumpur: Taiwan's two leading badminton players are set to face off in the opening round of the 2026 Malaysia Open men's singles, marking the beginning of the new season. The BWF Super 1000 tournament will be held from Tuesday to Sunday at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, featuring a much-anticipated match between veteran Chou Tien-chen and rising star Lin Chun-yi. Ranked No. 6 and No. 12 in the world respectively, they are the highest-ranked players from Taiwan.

According to Focus Taiwan, the specific date and time for the match between Chou and Lin had not been listed on the tournament's official schedule as of 1 p.m. Monday. The Malaysia Open is the first event on the 2026 calendar, commencing just two weeks after the conclusion of the 2025 BWF World Tour Finals. Chou participated in the 2025 event but was eliminated in the group stage. Despite this, he completed the year having competed in 27 tournaments, the most by any men's singles player globally.

As he approaches his 36th birthday on Thursday, Chou acknowledged the challenges of maintaining peak physical condition amidst the demanding global tour schedule. Nevertheless, he expressed his unwavering commitment to the sport. "I will keep challenging my opponents and stick to that mindset, no matter how old I am," Chou stated on Saturday.

In other news, two-time Olympic gold medalist Wang Chi-lin and his partner Chiu Hsiang-chieh will not participate in the BWF Super 1000 men's doubles competition due to Chiu's knee injury. Their absence positions world No. 14 Yang Po-hsuan and Lee Jhe-huei as the highest-ranked Taiwanese duo in the men's doubles category.
