Taipei: The Executive Yuan announced a significant Cabinet reshuffle involving 16 officials across 10 government agencies, including changes to the ministers of economic affairs, digital affairs, and health. Premier Cho Jung-tai is set to lead the new Cabinet at a public appearance following Thursday's weekly Cabinet meeting.
According to Focus Taiwan, the reshuffle comes as President Lai Ching-te's administration aims to address recent political challenges, including unsuccessful recall campaigns and declining approval ratings. Executive Yuan Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin will assume the role of minister of economic affairs, replacing Kuo Jyh-huei, who resigned due to health issues. Xavier Chang, currently deputy secretary-general at the Presidential Office, will fill Kung's previous position.
Ruan Zhao-syong, vice chairman of the Overseas Community Affairs Council, is set to replace Wu Kuei-lian as the new deputy secretary-general. In the National Development Council, Liu Chin-ching will be succeeded by Yeh Chun-hsien from Academia Sinica, following Liu's resignation for health reasons.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs sees Deputy Minister Lin Yi-jing promoted to minister, succeeding Yennun Huang, who is returning to Academia Sinica. Isabel Hou, an attorney and secretary-general of Taiwan AI Academy, will fill Lin's previous role.
In the health sector, National Health Insurance Administration Director-General Shih Chung-liang is set to become the new health minister, succeeding Chiu Tai-yuan. Chuang Jen-hsiang of Taiwan Centers for Disease Control will serve as deputy minister.
The Executive Yuan has confirmed that Olympic badminton gold medalist Lee Yang will lead the Ministry of Sports upon its inauguration on Sept. 9. Additional appointments include Hsieh Yein-rui as deputy minister of the Ministry of Environment and Liu Kuo-wei as deputy minister of Education. Former baseball star Chen Yi-hsin will take on the role of deputy minister of the Council of Indigenous Peoples.
