TAIPEI: In a significant show of military force, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported the detection of 34 Chinese military aircraft and 16 naval vessels near Taiwan over a 24-hour period. This activity included 22 warplanes crossing the sensitive Taiwan Strait median line into Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ). According to Focus Taiwan, the incursion involved a mix of fighter jets, drones, and helicopters penetrating Taiwan's northern, southwestern, and eastern ADIZ from Wednesday to Thursday. The ADIZ is a zone in which a country claims the right to identify and control approaching foreign aircraft, although it does not equate to sovereign airspace under international law. In response to the increased military presence, Taiwan's armed forces have heightened their vigilance by deploying aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems for monitoring purposes. The recent activity follows a pattern of heightened military operations by China, with the MND previously identifyi ng 100 People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft in the vicinity over a separate 48-hour period. Earlier in the week, China designated several airspace areas east of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces for military use, raising concerns about the potential for further military exercises. Foreign media have speculated that these actions may be a reaction to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's recent diplomatic tour in the South Pacific, which included stopovers in Hawaii and Guam. In response to the military maneuvers, Taiwan's Presidential Office spokesperson, Karen Kuo, emphasized that President Lai's visits to diplomatic allies are standard practice for Taiwanese leaders. She urged Beijing not to use such routine exchanges as a pretext for "provocative" actions, asserting that China's behavior threatens regional security and global peace.
