Golden Apple Snails Emerge as Economic Boost for Prachinburi Villagers

Prachinburi:Villagers in the Nong Saeng district have turned to raising golden apple snails as a new source of income. This initiative, taking place in Prachinburi province, involves converting land next to their homes into snail ponds. The snails require minimal investment and space, grow rapidly, and are in high demand, consistently falling short of market needs.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Nittaya Sonhad's Kook Nong Na project in Ban Nong Saeng has developed a simple yet effective method for farming golden apple snails. The process involves creating a bamboo frame, lining it with plastic sheeting, and filling it with clean water while avoiding tap water due to its chlorine content. Coconut fronds or watercress are used to provide a surface for the snails to cling to and lay eggs. The snails are fed banana stalks, duckweed, and lettuce, which are their preferred foods. Regular water changes are necessary, and protective nets are used to guard against birds.

The snails mature in about 90 days and are sold at 150 baht per kilogram, with larger snails fetching higher prices. The demand for golden apple snails is so high that advance orders are necessary, mainly from restaurants and vendors who prepare them in various dishes.

Ms. Nittaya notes that golden apple snails are favored over black apple snails due to their crispy texture and versatility in the kitchen. Her farm sells more than 20 kilograms daily. She invites anyone interested in farming golden apple snails to contact her for guidance.
