KMT Lawmaker Johnny Chiang Engages with Former Australian Prime Minister

Taipei: Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) visited former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, as reported by Taiwan's Legislative Yuan. During the meeting, Turnbull expressed support for Chiang's proposed "3D" principles-deterrence, dialogue, and democracy-to maintain regional peace and stability.

According to Focus Taiwan, Turnbull agreed that maintaining communication can reduce misunderstandings and create opportunities to ease tensions. Chiang emphasized that regional stability and economic security are major challenges amid global changes. He expressed a desire for Taiwan and Australia to develop a comprehensive partnership as bilateral trade grows.

Chiang highlighted Taiwan's role in the global semiconductor supply chain and Australia's mineral and agricultural resources as complementary. He also hoped Turnbull would support Taiwan's bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), citing the benefits of Taiwanese and Australian industry collaboration.

The same day, Chiang visited the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. The Legislature noted that Chiang left for Sydney with lawmakers to attend events with the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce and engage in parliamentary diplomacy. His visit to Australia is set for two and a half days, although his return date to Taiwan was not specified.
