Visiting Guam Governor Signs Sister-City Agreement with Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung: Visiting Guam Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero signed a sister-city agreement with the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung during her current visit to Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday. As part of an eight-day visit that concludes Wednesday, Guerrero traveled to Kaohsiung on March 5 to formalize the agreement with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai.

According to Focus Taiwan, on Monday, Governor Guerrero attended a welcome banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. During the event, she emphasized that the sister-city partnership between Guam and Kaohsiung aims to enhance ties through "city diplomacy." Guerrero highlighted her administration's efforts to expand bilateral cooperation with Taiwan in areas such as health care, tourism, and Indigenous affairs.

Foreign Minister Lin expressed his appreciation for Governor Guerrero's visit, noting that Taiwan and Guam share a "deep Austronesian cultural heritage" and are committed democratic partners focused on maintaining regional peace and stability. He also mentioned that future cooperation could include areas such as artificial intelligence in agriculture, medical services, education, and cultural exchanges to improve the well-being of people in both regions.

This trip marks Governor Guerrero's second visit to Taiwan since she assumed office as the governor of Guam in 2019. Her previous visit was in May 2025, as reported by MOFA.
