Police Summon Driver After Baby Stroller Incident in New Taipei

Taipei: Police on Monday announced they had summoned a driver for questioning after a vehicle struck a baby stroller in a crosswalk and then drove away in the city’s Xindian District.

According to Focus Taiwan, a video shared on Threads on Sunday captured the moment a Toyota sedan drove through a crosswalk and collided with the front of a stroller, causing it to swing 45 degrees to the side before the vehicle continued on its path. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday as a woman, identified by her surname Lin, was crossing Xinwu Road Section 1 with a baby.

The New Taipei City Police Department’s Xindian Precinct stated that after the collision with the stroller, the driver did not stop to assess the situation. Fortunately, both Lin and the baby escaped serious injury. However, Lin, aged 62, reported experiencing shoulder pain hours after the incident and subsequently informed the police on Monday, also seeking medical attention for her injury. She is slated to provide a formal statement to the authorities on Tuesday.

Following an investigation into the vehicle’s license plates, officers have summoned the driver on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident. The police highlighted that failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk could result in a fine ranging from NT$1,200 (US$38.49) to NT$6,000. In cases where a pedestrian is injured or killed, the fines increase to between NT$7,200 and NT$36,000, with the possibility of a one-year license suspension or revocation in the event of a fatality.

The Criminal Code stipulates that fleeing the scene after causing injury in an accident can lead to imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 5 years.
