Taipei: The Central Weather Administration (CWA) announced on Sunday the potential issuance of a sea warning for Tropical Storm Podul by Tuesday morning, with a land warning possibly following that evening, as per current projections.
According to Focus Taiwan, CWA forecaster Lin Ting-yi revealed during a press briefing that the severe tropical storm is expected to approach its closest point to Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday. As of 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, the storm was positioned at 21.4N 138.5E, advancing westward at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour. It was reported to have sustained winds of 108 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 136.8 kilometers per hour.
Lin elaborated on the storm’s location, noting it is approximately 1,780 kilometers west of Taiwan. He outlined two potential paths the storm could take over the coming days, contingent upon the behavior of the Pacific high-pressure system. If the high-pressure system diminishes, the storm is anticipated to move west-northwest, encountering less favorable conditions. Conversely, if the system retains its strength, the storm is likely to continue westward, maintaining its current intensity.
Regardless of the trajectory, Lin emphasized that Tropical Storm Podul will have varying impacts on Taiwan.
