Taipei: Taipei has been ranked the world’s 25th richest city in 2025, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$867.83 billion, according to CEOWORLD, an online business magazine. Taipei was the only Taiwanese city to make it into the top 100 in the survey, which ranked 300 metropolises worldwide.
According to Focus Taiwan, the New York-based CEOWORLD emphasized that these cities are not just urban areas but economic ecosystems influencing global financial flows, technological advancements, and policy impacts on markets. While Taipei secured the 25th position, other Taiwanese cities also featured among the world’s 300 wealthiest.
In central Taiwan, Taichung was ranked 116th with a GDP of US$436 billion, closely followed by Kaohsiung at 117th with US$433 billion. Taoyuan and Tainan were placed at 152nd and 174th, with GDPs of US$334.7 billion and US$288.7 billion, respectively.
Leading the list as the world’s richest city in 2025 is Tokyo, with a GDP of US$2.55 trillion, surpassing the New York metropolitan area, which ranked second. The Japanese capital is highlighted for its operational excellence, technological advancement, and disciplined economic management.
The magazine noted Japan’s capital as a unique example of integrating innovation with infrastructure, showcasing transportation systems, financial networks, and industrial supply chains operating with unmatched precision. The top 10 cities also included Los Angeles (Long Beach, Anaheim); London; Seoul; the Paris metropolitan area; Chicago (Naperville, Elgin); Osaka-Kobe; San Francisco (Oakland, Berkeley); and Shanghai, all contributing significantly to the global GDP.
Other notable Asian cities included in the rankings are Beijing (11th), Singapore (16th), Shenzhen (21st), Chongqing (26th), Guangzhou (27th), Hong Kong (29th), Nagoya (30th), and Bangkok (46th). The magazine attributes Asia’s prominent presence in the 2025 rankings to a broader shift in global economic power towards the east.
